Charlie marries Eva, a kind woman who gives Morrie and his brother the love and affection they need.

Mitch had expected such a dialogue to feel awkward, however this communication feels far more natural than he had ever expected. The next week, Mitch asks Morrie what the perfect day would be, and what Morrie describes is shockingly ordinary.

Morrie teaches Mitch many aphorisms, or words of wisdom, throughout the novel. Morrie greets Mitch with unqualified joy, but Mitch reacts with feelings of guilt.

Mitch calls the novel his "final thesis" that he wrote based on the class that Morrie taught about life and how to live it. When Mitch returns on the fourteenth week, Morrie is in bed and doing poorly. He explains how he lost touch with almost everyone he knew in college.

After falling out of contact, Morrie is diagnosed with ALS and finds himself in deteriorating health.

He revealed his secret and allowed his class to decide whether they wanted to stick around or drop the class. After he receives his diploma, Mitch approaches Morrie, his favorite professor, and introduces him to his parents.
