Colonel Graff comes to visit Valentine and has her write Ender a letter. He is granted a very special teacher, who will help him to become a commander to save humanity from the Third Invasion. So much is unknown in the book; slowly everything is explained, as you constantly gather more information about the situation.
Because of this he was always teased but his birth was actually authorized by the government in an attempt to save the world form the Buggers. The army commander, Bonzo Madrid, does not like Ender and does not want him around.
As the story progresses the setting moves to the planet Eros which is where he will be fighting the Buggers thinking he is just in a simulation but he is really fighting the Buggers.
On the flight there Ender demonstrates his ability to brilliantly visualize gravitational effects, and Graff begins to isolate him from his fellow classmates.
All the boys and girls at Battle School behave differently. Bonzo attacks Ender in the shower room and Ender beats him, brutally, because he was forced to. Ender goes up there, trying his best to become promoted in the difficult training scheme; his brother and sister are trying to restore the world and to make it a better place.
After this Ender gets shipped off to Eros, the planet which Command School is on and where he meets Mazer Rackham, who was the hero of the first bugger invasion, and Mazer begins training Ender on a simulator that learns and gets harder as the Buggers learn from the past.
Each toon of his army acts as an independent unit, and this revolutionizes battleroom strategy. He makes a few friends among the recruits and ends his isolation, although his brilliance will never cease causing resentment.
Ender gets into a fight and he hurts four older boys who attack him. Rackham runs Ender through a series of simulated battles, where he now commands an entire fleet. Before he goes Ender learns that he did killed Bonzo as well as the bully back in school.
Ender is made commander of Dragon Army and given a group of soldiers, most of them Launchies. This book was interesting at the beginning because of the way Orson Scott Card introduces you to a new world where you have no idea what is going on and slowly reveals the setting as you need to learn it, not overloading you with information at the beginning of the book but not leaving you clueless wondering why something just happened.
Overall, I would recommend this book to readers because of its excitement, meaning and unpredictability. At the same time they needed him to think it was a game in order to be able to win with such great loss of life.
Ender learns that the buggers are like highly evolved insects and they communicate instantaneously—their queen thinks for all of them. At the beginning, the reader has no clue about who is narrating; at one time I suspected it being the Buggers, which can be quite chilling, as the unknown narrator knows everything about Ender.
If he was assigned the mission to kill someone, he might as well have done it. This novel is about a brilliant military strategist, Ender Wiggin, whose story takes place in the future where there is a constant threat of an invasion from aliens who have been given the slanderous nickname, Bugger.
Ender was used, and he knows it, as do his teachers, but they explain that they needed him, a child, to have the compassion to understand the enemy. Ender changed from innocent and trusting into a hardened and semi-emotionless machine by the end of the story.
If you were to start reading from the end I actually tried it you would have no idea of what was happening to whom.
